Tips For Romantic Glamping Near Austin, Texas

Find a unique, romantic glamping getaway in the Texas hill country

Glamping in the hill country can be a truly memorable, unique, romantic escape for couples wanting something special near Austin, or within a reasonable drive from Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Glamping is great option for couples who want to go someplace different and maybe a little spicy.

A romantic glamping getaway at Talula Mesa Glamping Resort is one of the most memorable vacations you'll have.

It sounds obvious, but consider your priorities for a romantic getaway. Do you mind a place with units right next to each other, or would you prefer more privacy, with fewer glamping units spaced far apart? Is the "cuteness" factor of the accommodations or design/architecture important to you, or would you prefer a more regular place? Are you wanting to "wow" your partner? Are you willing to "rough it"? Are amenities like hot tubs important? Does it need to be a private hot tub, or is a shared tub ok?

Consider the setting. Anything east of I-35 is likely to be fairly flat, while west of Austin will put you in the hill country. Are you after those gorgeous hill country views? How about lake views? Lake access? Look carefully at the view out of your rental unit. Does it have windows (some tents, yurts, and teepees don't). How do you prefer glass windows, or is a plastic dome OK? Does it overlook houses or stores, or simply nature? How much money are you willing to spend? More affordable glamping options generally run $300 ish per night on weekends, and more expensive options go up to $800 per night. What type of heating and AC is provided?

  1. Chose a glamping resort with lots of privacy.

If you're after romance, I'd recommend renting a glamping tent or pod that's spaced out from its neighbors. Do you want someone overhearing your coversation? Do you want to see your neighbors or be nestled in a grove of trees all to yourselves?

A couple dressed in wedding attire is holding hands, happily looking at each other, while their dog walks beside them, all glamping together. Behind them is a unique and beautiful glamping tent or pod, framed with cedar logs and covered in cowboy-tent style canvas, with a large glass wall looking out on the Texas hill country and Lake Travis, outside of Austin, Texas. The tent and the couple are shaded by live oak trees.

  2. Glamping with a private hot tub is extra romantic.

Relaxing in a private hot tub with your partner is a memorable way to end the day. Consider the views from the hot tub at the place you choose. Will you be staring out at miles of beautiful Texas hill country?

Behind her is a beautiful and unique glamping tent or pod with a large glass wall that looks out into the hill country and nature. The glamping tent is made of a cedar log frame and cowboy tent or safari-tent style canvas with a southwestern design painted on it. The tent has a large wooden porch decorated with small glowing lanterns.

  1. Consider glamping with outdoor showers.

A steamy outdoor shower is a unique experience. A steamy shower for two? Even more memorable. Under a dark night sky? Yes, please! A fuzzy fleece robe to wear to and from the showers or hot tub? Heck yeah!

  2. Glamping with heat and AC is a must in Texas.

Consider the heat and AC situation of the glamping unit you're choosing. AC is fairly straightforward, but heat can be tricky. Be aware that heating from a mini-split AC unit often doesn't work below 32F. I didn't know that, and woke up to a freezing surprise the first time it got below 32F outside. Glamping tents and yurts have traditionally been heated with wood-fired camping stoves and hot water bottles in bed. While I adore a hot water bottle in bed, it's not the only source of heat I want. And while I love a wood-fired stove, I don't want the burden of having to feed it wood durin the night, or have my clothes smell like smoke. All of these things were very important to me when choosing the indoor fireplaces for Talula Mesa Glamping Resort. I searched hight and low for heaters that a) produced a real flame (this ruled out electric heaters) for the ambiance, b) were easy to operate and weren't wood-fired, c) put out a lot of heat to keep guests cozy and warm.

  3. Choose your style: Plan your itinerary ahead of time, or simply allow the trip to unfold spontaneously.

I've seen some folks book a surprise itinerary for their partner, who absolutely loved it. If your partner is into that sort of thing, going as far as printing little itineraries for the weekend can be a very thoughtful touch that wins you lots of brownie points. Some folks, on the other hand, prefer to be spontaneous and plan-free. Consider what your partner would enjoy the most. If you'd like help planning, I've created seasonal guides and all sorts of curated lists of nearby activities. Talula Mesa is lucky to be near fantastic restaurants, wineries, breweries, adventure activities, shopping, and hiking. Luckenbach, Johnson City, Burnet, and Marble Falls are all within driving distance. Lucky us!

  4. Be mindful of popular family vacation weeks.

If you're looking for romantic glamping for couples, avoid spring break week for the local Austin area, which is typically mid-March in Texas. That's the most popular time of year for family glamping.

  1. Bring your dog glamping with you.

While some couples want a quiet weekend away from their dogs, I've known some people who can't relax if they're worried about a petsitter or their dog's wellbeing. If you're more relaxed when your dog is by your side, then bring your dog glamping. We're pet-friendly and allow up to two dogs to come glamping at Talula Mesa Glamping Resort. Read our blog post all about glamping with dogs at Talula Mesa Glamping Resort.

  1. Ask about romance packages.

We offer balloons, wine, and/or flowers, along with other optional add-ons for your tent. I'm also happy to give suggestions on romatic spots onsite, how to plan an engagement here (we've hosted quite a few), or how to best surprise your sweetie here. Book a place with an owner who is enthusiastic about helping, and you won't go wrong.
